Summer Reading Challenge - "Official info and rules"

Who - anyone who wants to participate. This is a blog challenge but you may participate without a blog.

WHY - I love to read. I found that participating in the Spring Reading Thing gave me "permission" to read a bit every day. I also thought it was fun to have a list to work through in order to see how much I have read. Thanks to Katrina for hosting the Spring Reading Thing. I find I have MORE reading time in the summer when I don't have a heavy Homeschool and Bible Study schedule. I was disappointed (but understood why) that Katrina only does a spring and fall challenge.....after thinking about it....I decided to host my own summer challenge with bloggy friends and whoever else would like to sign up.

When - my thought is that summer is Memorial Day - Labor Day...sign up anytime you'd like. In order to be eligible for the $10 Amazon Gift Certificate at the end of the challenge you must sign up and leave a link to your READING LIST by June 9th (BreAnne's Birthday). However, you may join at any time. You may count books that you've completed anytime between Memorial Day and Labor Day. I realize this overlaps with the Spring Reading Thing hosted by Calipidder Days. You choose how to handle your challenge. I do not care if you list books you finish on that challenge on your summer challenge list as well. You can wait until after that challenge and then move unfinished books to this list. The only thing to remember is that if you want to be considered for the PRIZE DRAWING at the end of THIS challenge you must link your list by June 9th.

How ~ The Rules!

1. YOU decide what your goals are. Will this be a personal challenge? Will this be a family challenge? Do you want to read 10 minutes a day to your 3 yo? Do you want to have this be a family read aloud challenge? Do you want to read all twaddle? Do you want to read very serious books? Do you want to finish 1/2 read books? It's up to YOU. You may also adjust your list as you go along. If you start a series and realize you HATE it - take the rest of the series off your list. If you start a series and find that you love it (like I did with the Yada Yada books during the Spring Reading Thing) add the rest of the series to your list. YOU ARE IN THE DRIVER SEAT.

2. Compile a list of books you are challenging yourself to read.

3. Write a post about your goals for the Summer Reading Challenge, and include your list of books in this post. Do this by June 9th if you want to be eligible for drawing - but you may join the challenge at any time between now and Labor Day.

4. Sign Mr Linky here and link to YOUR POST ABOUT YOUR GOALS/LIST!!! This is important. Do not list to your blog home page...be sure to link to the post with your list. This will enable others to click the link HERE and go directly to your list. It's fun to find new things to read from other's lists. Since the challenge is long...if you post only to your blog others may have a hard time finding your list. If you do not have a blog - simply leave your name in the comment section of this email and let us know you are participating and what your goals are. *For blogger you may find the link to your post by right clicking on the time stamp, then clicking on properties, then copy the link and paste it as a hyperlink here at Mr. Linky. If you have trouble let me know and if I'm not overwhelmed I can visit your blog, snatch the link and like you to Mr. Linky....as my summertime schedule permits.

5. Here's a graphic. Save it to your computer and post it on your blog. Link back to THIS post please! This will allow others who see your graphic to find out what we are doing and participate if they desire. You may participate in the challenge without using the graphic and linking back - but to be eligible for the drawing you need to do this.

6. If you WANT to, write reviews of books you read and post them on your blog. If you don't want to, don't. ::snort::

7. At the END of the challenge, by September 9th, write a post on your blog about your experience with the summer reading challenge. I will have an entry then for you to leave a note in the comment section if you've done that. You don't have to do this to participate in the challenge - but to be eligible for the prize you do have to do it.

Who Wins? - We all do. If you make any sort of progress towards your goals - you win. One lucky participant who meets the requirements will win a gift certificate, several will win items in our random drawings.

PRIZE DRAWING
There will be one $10 gift certificate to Amazon chosen after Labor Day for one lucky participant. To be eligible you must post your reading list by June 9th on your blog and link here (or if you have no blog leave in the comment section here). You must post the graphic with a link back to this post on your blog. You must write an entry at the end of the challenge, by September 9th, about your experience and let me know that you've posted. (Ladies - a sentence is fine here.) I will randomly draw a winner from those who have met the deadlines.

RANDOM DRAWINGS
I'm working on some drawings. Trish, a friend I met in AK, is going to donate some prizes and help me mail them as well. Thanks Trish. These drawings will be crafty items, as well as some new or like new books. I will post an entry here when we're ready to give something away. If you want to be considered for the random drawing you will simply leave a note saying so in the comment section of the blog. I will randomly pick from those who would like to be considered for the item of the week and it will be mailed to you. Since we are a smaller challenge, I'm guessing there will be a fairly good opportunity to win one of these drawings. Of course, I'm guessing about 20 participants....LOL

So - write your entry on goals and a list. Post it on your blog and then come sign up with Mr. Linky.

Let the reading begin!

~De'Etta

P. S. Yes, I wrote this at 3 a.m. because I have chiggers - what else would I be doing at 3 a.m????? And, of course, if this makes no sense at all - feel free to ask questions.

56 Gracious thoughts:

Thanks to all who tried out MR Linky for me. I deleted the links that didn't go to a list...thanks for helping me test it out.

IF I figure out how to make a list of participants I will for the side bar...if not the lists can be found by clicking on MR Linky.

De'Etta said...

NOW I can't get the graphic to go into my sidebar....but obviously I have no trouble with it in the posts....any ideas? It's too late or too early to do more now....maybe I can sleep regardless of the chiggers.

Cynthia said...

Can we add more to our booklist as we go along or do we have to have a complete list now?

De'Etta said...

You can change your list as you like - it's YOUR challenge. LOL

I added three to my spring reading list last week - maybe I should move them here and say I'm done when I finish the other ones.....

Cynthia said...

Yea.. I saw that in the rules after I posted the question.. sorry I should have read further. I actually made a list for the Spring Challenge, too, so I should go over there and get the blinkie thing and finalize that list! In fact, that is the challenge that started me thinking about the scrapbooking challenge I've been working on for awhile.

Cynthia said...

Do you know where the code is for adding the Linky bloglist so you can scroll through everyone who signed up?

Diann said...

I want to get started after this weekend. I am pushing it even reading blogs this week, but I need to do something that doesn't involve this wedding this week.

De'Etta said...

I'm not sure what you are wanting Cindy? Do you want to add Mr. Blinky (like for your challenge) to your blog?

There is an admin setting where I can add the scrolling list to my sidebar...and I have to figure that out still - TRISH is helping me - when I figure it out - if everyone can put it on their blogs I'll let you know how.

If you are wanting to add your own Mr. Linky to your site for a different challenge you go to http://www.blenza.com

Trish, an ordinary life artist said...

LOL De'Etta ~ I'm on there twice! I didn't realize you imported the Mr. Linky from the trial run post ~ so you might want to go to your Mr. Linky administrative page and take my second entry off. Sorry :(

Debbie said...

De'Etta, I'm sorry, somehow I didn't get the link right on Mr. Linky the first time, so my name is on their twice. Is it hard for you to delete them? Number 5 doesn't work, #6 does.
I think I'm all set up and ready to go!
Thanks again.

mamabright said...

I've never done this before...but I'm so excited to participate...summer is already my major reading time so I've already started a summer list...

but I do have a question...I just recently started a blog...and I created a "books" page so I could keep track of what I'm reading and wanting to read...so it already has the start of a summer reading list...

can I link to my books page with my list on it instead of a specific post...???

thanks for hosting!

blessings, amy :-)

De'Etta said...

Nah, ladies, it isn't hard to delete the links that don't work....I'll get to it.

De'Etta said...

Amy - the point of having your write a post about the challenge is so you link back to the post that explains what we are doing - so we can get the word out.....

SO....do you mine simply adding a sentence or two to the top of your list explaining that you are participating in the Summer Challenge and then linking that to this post????

You do NOT have to do this unless you want to qualify for the prize drawing at the end of the challenge.

mamabright said...

sorry...I wasn't very clear...

I totally intend to make a post about the challenge...and link to you in the post...on my main page...and on my books page...

I would just prefer to link back to my books page so that as I update my list through the summer it will link back to my most current list...and not my original one...

I hope that makes more sense...

thanks again!

blessings, amy :-)

De'Etta said...

Amy - that's fine. Most of us update our original list as we read so that it is always current...you are wanting to do the same thing - just a different route...LOL Happy reading!

mamabright said...

thanks, De'Etta!!!

I completed the update of my books page and have added my name to Mr. Linky...I'm going right now to write my post and add your graphic to my main page...

blessings, amy :-)

I think this is going to be very cool! I've been looking at other lists and there are a lot of books I don't recognize which will be great for getting new authors and reading reviews!

Darshia said...

*If you do not have a blog - simply leave your name in the comment section of this email and let us know you are participating and what your goals are.*

I am participating in the Summer Reading Challenge 2007.

My goal: To read a minimum of 30 minutes a day drawing from a list of 13 books grouped into 3 categories of Spiritual Growth, Personal Improvement & Fun-In-The-Sun.

Karla said...

Hi, De'Etta! I wanna play! I'll post about it when we get back from camping this weekend. Thanks for doing this!

Cynthia said...

De-
Yes.. I was just wanting to list a blogroll underneath the icon in my sidebar... see my photohunter thing for example. I've already set up my scrapbook challenge thing with blogroll since I KNEW how to do that (LOL). It's just take me a bit longer these days to try new things since I have to do everything in HTML on my blog now that I have the makeover. It's not *hard* it's just new and you know how I am with learning curves (LOL).

De'Etta said...

Darshia - you're set. Sounds like some great goals.

De'Etta said...

Karla, my pleasure. I look forward to checking out your list when you post the link.

BTW I think you are Karla that I new years and years ago on a SL list????

Glad you found us.

Jodi said...

This will be fun! I'll do my list and link and such tomorrow, too tired tonight and I will get it wrong! I already see one on your list which I'll put on my list too pending ILL or PBS. The arctic one sounds great. It will be good to get ideas from each other.

nyisutter said...

Is this where we are supposed to mention we want to be in on drawings?

nyisutter said...

Oh never mind. I think I get it now. When you post the drawings we are supposed to say whether we want in that particular one or not?

De'Etta said...

Jen - when we do a drawing I will write a post and say what is up for grabs. Those who want to be included will have time to respond and then I'll draw.

Michelle said...

De'Etta,
I'm signed up. :) Thanks!

De'Etta said...

My pleasure, Michelle.

Mandy said...

Good Morning De'Etta! I have signed up too. I have finally started my own blog so I can fully participate in the Summer Reading Challenge. I LOVE IT! Thanks for opening my eyes to the joy of blogging. Blessings-Mandy (SHS)

Thank you for allowing us non-bloggers to participate!!

My goals for this challenge involve reading daily, including several chapters in my year Bible Reading plan with my husband, as well as chapter(s) in the long list of books to follow. While I would love to be finished all of these by the completion of the challenge, I will consider it a success if I get through any of them! :-)

- Bible-- be read through the book of Jeremiah
- Discerning the Voice of God by Priscilla Shirer
-His Girl by Vicki Courtney ( I am a mentor for a teen bible study this summer reading this)
- Amazing Grace by Phillip Yancey
- Parenting with Love and Logic (next to be done in our Sunday School class)
- Big Girls Don't Whine: Getting on With the Great Life God Intends by Jan Silvious
- Having a Mary Spirit: Allowing God to Change us from the Inside Out by Joanna Weaver
- The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands by Dr. Laura Schlessinger
- Peace with God by Billy Graham
- What Every Mom needs by Elisa Morgan and Carol Kuykendall
- Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach by Robin Sampson (still need to buy)
- Feminine Appeal: 7 Virtues of a Godly Wife and Mother by Carolyn Mahaney (still need to buy)
- the parts of The Well Trained Mind that apply to this stage in my homeschool journey ( with just toddlers, it will mostly be the parts on the journey itself so not too many)
- the parts of Teaching Your Children Good Manners by Lauri Berkenkamp that apply to this stage (mostly birth- 3/4 years of age)

That should DEFINITELY be enough to keep me busy!! Thanks!!!!!

Okay, I think I have signed up correctly. Please let me know if the links didn't work or something. Thanks for doing this, De'Etta! :-) I'm looking forward to it.

My pleasure. Blogging CAN become addictive...I have Jodi, Jen, Jen, Jen and Kelly to blame for my addiciton. ::snort::

De'Etta said...

Rachel - you're set. All you and Darshia will need to do to qualify for the drawing at the end will be to comment on how the challenge went for you at the END of it.

I love Amazing Grace by Philip Yancey.....

**Life God Intends by Jan Silvious
I'll be interested to hear what you think of this book - another author I've "thought" about reading for years. LOL

Jodi said...

I think I've done all the steps. I have joined Mr. Linky but didn't understand how to get a graphic of him to put in the post. Is that something we are supposed to do too?

De'Etta said...

Jodi - you don't get Mr Linky's graphic on to your blog. Just the challenge graphic.

Debbie said...

De'Etta, does "The Toilet Ring" have to do with the challenge? Do we need to sign up for that?

Heidi said...

Hi! I linked here from Katrina's blog to check out the Summer Reading Challenge. I signed up, posted a link back from my blog, and will be adding a more detailed list in about 2 weeks.
Thanks!

The Spring Reading Challenge was fun even if I didn't get my list finished. I'm signing up for this one too. Thanks!

I'm so excited to get a chance to finish my Spring Challenge. Plus a few more. Thanks!

One book down, (Yada Yada Prayer Group), and still 13 to go since I'm adding the next in the series to the list! It's nice to have a goal to read. Thanks for the challenge, Sis!

Karen said...

Thanks for the challenge. It'll help give me a focus in my reading. It might also encourage more regular blogging, or at least more thoughtful blogging.

Christa said...

Hi ~ I linked here from Heidi's blog and I would like to participate - I am getting in just under the buzzer...lol. I have a post about the challenge -my list is books that I want to read thru with my kiddos.

Here is the link to my post about the reading club on my blog - along with my list. (I am working on it right this second, I just wanted to be sure to get in by the deadline).

OK, I think I'm linked up and ready to read. Just under the wire for the drawing. Kind of just the way my life goes ya know??

Thanks for hosting and getting us all together. I am looking forward to hearing what everyone else is reading. I LOVE adding to my list ;)

Becky said...

Do you have the code for HTML to put the graphic - linked - on the sidebar??? I'd do that if you have it.

ThoughtfulMom said...

After 162 tries at making a list of books that I really really want to read and talking myself out of entering this challenge 74 times, I finally got a post written and linked to the Mr. Linky. There is so much that I want to read that I can't possibly read it in the time I have - and I don't know if I'll successfully finish the list I made - it may be too long (and I set a specific goal for two books on the list and won't be reading all of either - but I'll conquer 13 chapters of each, gosh darn it.

But right now I'm going to quite typing and pick up my crying baby.

Didn't realize the summer challenge was in the works...but I'm signed up now.

p.s. nice to meet you of sorts lol... I stumbled upon your blog just a couple of days ago from another blog I read...

Hi De'Etta. I just joined the challenge and signed Mr. Linky. I could not for the life of me figure out how to make the button show up in my sidebar with the code that was posted. I ended up copying it from someone else's blog but I hate to do that and would like to replace it the right way using the code you provided any tips? Thanks for hosting....

I finally did it! I posted my books and I added your link to my sidebar, following your instructions. Yipee! I'm too late for the drawing but that's ok. I finally had time (we had annual meetings and camp) to type my books into the computer.

How do you find time to read ALL the books on your list? :>

Blessings,
Jamie Z.

De'Etta ~ just wanted to let you know that I have 2 copies of One Step Over the Border by Stephen Bly to give away on my blog. I read it and wrote a review for CFBA; that's on my blog, too. Hop over to ordinarylife.typepad.com to sign up for the drawing! :)

Blessings,
Trish
